Using traditional techniques like crochet, latch hook, and felting, she meticulously upcycles textile waste into intricate, nature-inspired masterpieces. These discarded materials, which would have otherwise been destined for landfills, are skilfully repurposed into vibrant coral reefs, lush foliage, and other evocative natural forms.
“My approach is deeply rooted in the connection between textiles and nature, with a particular focus on marine ecosystems,” explains Vanessa. “I use traditional techniques to upcycle textile waste into immersive artworks. These materials, which would have otherwise been discarded, are transformed into representations of coral reefs and other natural forms.”
Through her awe-inspiring works, Vanessa aims to highlight the importance of sustainable practices and mindful production, while also raising awareness about the pressing environmental challenges our planet faces. “I hope to raise awareness about climate change and pollution, urging people to reflect on their relationship with nature and inspiring a collective responsibility to protect it,” she says.

Vanessa’s artistic inspiration is firmly rooted in the natural world, particularly the captivating textures and vibrant colours of the ocean. Growing up by the seaside, she developed a deep fascination with underwater landscapes, which she meticulously translates into her textile artworks.
“My inspiration is firmly rooted in nature, especially the ocean. Growing up by the seaside, I developed a fascination with the textures and colors of underwater landscapes, and that’s what I try to bring to life through my textile art,” Vanessa explains.
However, Vanessa’s work goes beyond simply depicting the beauty of nature. Each intricate piece serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of the ecosystems that sustain us, and the urgent need to address the environmental threats they face.
“But beyond the beauty, what really drives me is the urgency to address the environmental threats our oceans face. Each piece is a reminder of what’s at stake. I want my art to inspire reflection and, hopefully, action,” she says.

Vanessa’s commitment to sustainability is deeply woven into her artistic practice, stemming from her background in fashion and textile design. During her studies, she was confronted with the stark realities of the environmental damage caused by the fashion industry, a revelation that profoundly shaped her creative direction.
“Studying fashion and textile design was eye-opening for me. It taught me a lot about the techniques I use today, but it also exposed me to the environmental damage the fashion industry causes. That realization pushed me to shift my focus toward sustainability during my master’s degree,” Vanessa explains.
Now, Vanessa prioritizes creativity that respects both the environment and her own creative rhythms. She works exclusively with textile waste from factories, transforming these discarded materials into art. Her creative process also emphasizes slow, handcrafted techniques, which prioritize quality and longevity over mass production.

This dedication to sustainability extends to Vanessa’s sourcing of materials, as she has established relationships with textile factories that provide her with their discarded remnants. “I work exclusively with waste from the textile industry. The materials I use come from factory leftovers that would otherwise go to waste. I’ve established relationships with several factories that supply me with their discards, allowing me to turn these unwanted materials into something meaningful,” she explains.
Scaling Up: Ambitious Installations
Vanessa’s artistic vision extends beyond smaller-scale artworks, as she has also created large-scale installations that captivate audiences on a grand scale. One such project, the Botanical Tapestry at Heathrow Airport, was the largest piece she had ever undertaken, requiring six months of dedicated work to complete.
“Large-scale installations are always emotional projects for me. The Botanical Tapestry at Heathrow was the largest piece I’ve ever made—it took six months to complete. Projects like this require immense dedication and passion throughout the process, but seeing the final result displayed to a wide audience is incredibly rewarding,” Vanessa shares.
These ambitious installations not only showcase Vanessa’s remarkable artistic skills but also amplify her message of environmental stewardship. By transforming vast spaces with her intricate, nature-inspired creations, she invites viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world and reflect on their own relationship with it.
“When the work is finally installed, it’s an emotional experience; you feel proud of the journey and the story the piece tells,” she adds.

Vanessa’s artistic vision is further enriched by her own personal experiences and memories. Growing up by the Portuguese coastline, she developed a deep fascination with the textures and colours of the underwater world, and these formative experiences continue to shape her creative expression.
“My childhood memories of the coastline and the underwater world have left a lasting impact on my artistic vision. Over time, I’ve seen the degradation of these environments, and those images have stayed with me. Translating those memories into art allows me to express both the beauty of what I experienced and the sadness of what’s being lost,” Vanessa explains.
Integrating these personal recollections into her work allows Vanessa to imbue her art with a deeply emotional resonance, inviting viewers to connect with the fragile ecosystems she seeks to honour and protect.
Art as a Catalyst for Change

“I don’t see my work as activism in the traditional sense, but it does carry a strong message about the beauty and fragility of nature. I want my art to encourage viewers to reflect on their own connection to the environment and inspire them to be more conscious of their impact,” Vanessa says.
This commitment to environmental awareness has led to remarkable collaborations, such as the donation of Vanessa’s tapestry “Coral Vivo” to the United Nations headquarters, where it serves as a symbol of hope for a more sustainable future.
“Coral Vivo now has a permanent home at the United Nations, which was an incredible honor. It was donated by my home country, Portugal, as a symbol of hope for a better future. The UN’s choice to feature my work reflects the belief that art can communicate urgent messages and mobilize society,” Vanessa explains.
Evolving Artistry and Future Aspirations
As Vanessa’s artistic practice has evolved, her style and approach have also undergone a remarkable transformation. While her focus has always been on eco-friendly textile art, she continues to push the boundaries of her work, exploring new materials and techniques to enhance the immersive qualities of her installations.
“My focus has always been on eco-friendly textile art, but my style is constantly evolving. Looking ahead, I want to create more immersive installations where people can engage with my art and feel a deeper connection to nature. I’m also excited to experiment with new materials and techniques to continue pushing the boundaries of my work while staying true to my sustainability principles,” Vanessa shares.
